I have written these things to you that you may know that you have eternal life, to you who believe into the name of the Son of God.
1 John 5:13
If you have had the experience of receiving Christ, you may have questioned or doubted the reality of that experience, and questioned whether you are really saved. However, it is possible to know with assurance that you are saved.
We need the assurance of our salvation as a solid foundation in order for us to grow, progress, and to go on to experience the deeper things of Christ. There is no need for us to wait until we die to know for sure whether or not we’re saved; this knowing is for now!
First John 5:13 says that we may know that we have eternal life! It does not say that we may feel, or that we think or hope that we are saved, No! God’s word says that we may know! This knowing is an absolute and solid assurance.
There are three means to be assured of our salvation. The first means is God’s word. God’s word is sure and steadfast – it is impossible for God to lie. Whatever God says stands firm forever.
In Romans chapter 10, verses 9-13, the Bible says, whoever believes that Jesus Christ has risen from the dead and confesses with his mouth that Jesus is Lord is saved. And also, whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Have you done this? Have you believed in Christ and confessed openly that He is your Lord? Have you called on His name? If so, then you are really saved. God says so, and that settles it.
We also can know that we are saved by the inward witnessing in our spirit. Sometimes we may not feel that we are saved, but if we check with the deepest part of our being, our spirit, we will find an inner witnessing, an assurance, that we are, in fact, a child of God.
Romans 8:16 says, The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God. If you doubt that you have this inner witness, try to declare boldly that you are not a child of God. It will be very difficult to even whisper such a falsehood. Why? Because the Spirit witnesses within you that you are a child of God!
Lastly we can know that we are saved because we love other believers. A saved person spontaneously senses love in their heart for others who are also saved. You sense a desire to be with other believers, to fellowship, and enjoy Christ with others. This is the spontaneous result of being saved.
This is the real oneness and harmony the world longs for, and it is ours when we receive Christ.
That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
Romans 10:9
For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 10:13
The Spirit Himself witnesses with our spirit that we are children of God.
Romans 8:16
We know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers.
1 John 3:14
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell in unity
Psalm 133:1
